Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. famously once said: “[E]verybody can be great, because everybody can serve.” This quote captures the essence of last week’s activities.

Around the District

ErikaDecaturTails.jpgWhile good governance is key to reforming our state and country, the community service rendered by citizens throughout the district is essential to fostering vibrant and flourishing communities. This past week, I visited with citizens who are involved with such efforts. I had the privilege of speaking at the Rotary Club of Clinton and Champaign West Rotary and discussed the importance of trying to use our lives and talents in the service of others. It was inspiring to learn of the many significant service initiatives these groups are leading.

I also had the opportunity to support some of the other service efforts going on throughout the district. I was a judge for Champaign-Urbana’s “Dancing with the Stars” event to benefit the Don Moyer Boys & Girls Club. An incredible $146,000 was raised to provide empowering opportunities for young people. I also attended the “Whiskers and Tails Black and White Ball” to support the Macon County Animal Control and Care Center. Attending these events served as a reminder that the real power to change our country lies not in the government but rather in the hearts of committed citizens.

In the News

This past weekend, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch profiled this race for voters in the Metro East area of the district.  The article provides a fascinating overview of some of the key dynamics at issue in this race. Please read the article and then forward it to others who you think may be interested in learning more about the campaign.

Thank you again for all of your support and encouragement; this truly is a team effort!

With Gratitude,

Erika Harold
